Day 34 (Oct. 6th) - We decided not to go to
Pompei because of the travel time required (2 1/2 hours in each direction) and the expense.
Instead, we took the commuter train to
Ostia Antica. The ruins here are better preserved than those in Pompei, but there aren't any volcanos. It's only a 1€ bus ticket to get there.
On a side note, the trains are almost entirely covered with graffiti. It't quite incredible.

After wondering the ruins during the morning and having lunch at the cafeteria, we hopped back on the train and headed to
Lido di Ostia, the beach. The commuter train ends about 4 stops after Ostia Antica. We walked from the train station to a beach place. Most of the beaches are privately owned. The normal fee is 10€ per person, but somehow we only paid 25€ for the family. In addition to access to the beach, we got 4 recliners.
The temperature of the water, the low waves, and the beach vendors reminded us of Rocky Point. However, the sand here was much darker.
The girls swam, and Renae and I got massages from a beach vendor.

We are scheduled to have a tour of Coloseum, Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum tomorrow, however, our guide emailed me this evening that she couldn't reserver tickets. I'll have to get up early tomorrow to try to buy tickets before our tour starts at 10:30 a.m.
